Security Officer Killed in Attack on Checkpoint in Sweida

A Syrian security officer was killed and two others wounded in an attack targeting a checkpoint in the western countryside of Sweida province, southern Syria, on Tuesday.

According to a security source, the attack was carried out by unidentified armed groups. The source stated that security forces engaged the attackers, resulting in casualties among the assailants. The Ministry of Interior condemned what it described as a “terrorist attack perpetrated by outlaw gangs,” asserting that such actions are aimed at destabilizing security and disrupting the lives of civilians in Sweida province.

The incident follows an announcement by Internal Security Forces in Sweida last Saturday regarding the liberation of two citizens who had been kidnapped approximately a month and a half prior. These individuals were reportedly freed after a period of surveillance and tracking.

Sweida province has been under a ceasefire since July 19th, following a week of armed clashes between Druze factions and Bedouin tribes. These clashes resulted in hundreds of deaths and injuries.

The Syrian National Committee for Investigating the Events in Sweida presented its latest findings on November 17th, pledging to hold accountable all those involved in violations that occurred in the province during July. Judge Hatem al-Naasan, head of the committee, stated during a press conference in Damascus that the committee is committed to revealing the truth, determining responsibility, and ensuring justice for victims.

The unrest in Sweida began with clashes between Bedouin tribes and armed Druze groups in July. Syrian government forces intervened to contain the clashes but faced attacks from local armed groups, leading to their withdrawal. The clashes resulted in numerous casualties among both civilians and military personnel. Reports indicate that violations occurred, including field executions and the displacement of thousands of residents. The Syrian government is reportedly making efforts to stabilize the region.
