ORAN, Algeria – The vibrant coastal city of Oran has been awarded the prestigious Gold Prize by the African-Asian Union as the leading emerging tourism destination in Africa for 2025. This accolade underscores the significant reforms and advancements within Algeria’s tourism sector.
Oran, affectionately known as ‘Al-Bahia’ (the radiant), secured this coveted title after competing against over twenty other African cities. The selection process highlighted Oran’s unique blend of rich history, modern infrastructure, and dynamic cultural scene.
According to Abdelwahab Boulfkhad, President of the National Federation of Hotel and Tourism Industries, Oran’s selection was based on its considerable tourism assets. “Oran boasts significant tourism potential, including well-developed infrastructure and a proven track record of successfully hosting numerous economic, political, and sporting events of international importance,” he stated.
Boulfkhad also emphasized the government’s support for investors in the hospitality sector, noting that Oran alone has 230 hotels, many of which meet international standards. These accommodations cater to the growing influx of tourists drawn to the city’s beautiful beaches, historical landmarks, and lively atmosphere.
Beyond its natural beauty and infrastructure, Oran’s rich history adds another layer of appeal, solidifying its position as a rising star in African tourism. This recognition positions Oran to become an increasingly prominent destination on the global tourism map, attracting visitors from around the world seeking a unique and unforgettable experience.
The award is expected to further boost Oran’s tourism industry, creating new opportunities for investment and development and solidifying its place as a key economic hub in Algeria.
