European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has affirmed that any agreement concerning Ukraine must lead to a just and lasting peace, guaranteeing genuine security for both Ukraine and Europe. Speaking during a European session in Strasbourg on Wednesday, focused on the peace plan for Ukraine, she emphasized that Europe would not accept the forceful alteration of Ukraine’s borders.
Von der Leyen stressed that imposing limits on the size of Ukraine’s armed forces would leave the country vulnerable to future aggression, a scenario unacceptable to European nations. She declared her support for all efforts leading to a fair and enduring peace in Ukraine, while safeguarding the security of the European continent. Furthermore, she reiterated the EU’s support for Ukraine’s aspirations to join the European Union.
This announcement follows reports that Russia has received the latest version of the American peace plan. According to sources, some provisions of the plan require serious study and analysis. It has also been reported that discussions between Russian and Ukrainian intelligence representatives have taken place, addressing sensitive issues related to prisoners of war.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that the revised version of the peace plan, currently under discussion with the United States and Europe, incorporates some positive changes. However, he noted that certain sensitive issues will be discussed later with the US President.
DZWatch understands that previous versions of the American plan proposed that Ukraine cede Crimea and the Donbas region, demilitarize the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, abandon its NATO aspirations, reduce its armed forces, prohibit the deployment of international forces on Ukrainian territory, and conduct general elections.
