Kurdistan Gas Field Attack Sparks Outrage, Questions in Iraq

Sulaymaniyah, Iraq – A drone attack on the Kor Mor gas field in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq has triggered widespread anger and speculation, DZWatch has learned. The incident, which occurred Wednesday evening, resulted in a complete disruption of gas supplies to power plants and a suspension of operations at the vital facility.

Social media platforms were flooded with reports and amateur video footage purportedly showing plumes of smoke rising from the site of the attack. The incident has raised serious concerns about energy security and stability in the region.

Iraq’s Security Media Cell released a statement confirming the attack, stating that the Kor Mor field in Sulaymaniyah province was targeted around 11:30 PM local time on Wednesday. The statement indicated that one of the main storage tanks at the gas field was set ablaze, but thankfully, there were no casualties reported. The Security Media Cell condemned the attack as a direct threat to the interests of the Iraqi people and a dangerous act of terrorism aimed at undermining efforts to establish security and economic stability in the country.

“Those responsible for these attacks will face justice, and strict legal measures will be taken against those involved in this treacherous and cowardly act,” the statement emphasized.

However, the statement did not attribute blame to any specific group. This lack of clarity has fueled intense speculation online, with many Iraqis questioning who was behind the attack. “Who benefits from destabilizing the Kurdistan Region’s energy infrastructure?” asked one prominent social media user. Others pointed out that the incident comes just weeks after the Kurdistan Regional Government announced a project to provide 24-hour electricity to cities in the region, with plans to expand gas supply.

As of this writing, neither the federal government in Baghdad nor the Kurdistan Regional Government has issued any further statements identifying the perpetrators. The investigation is ongoing.
