Heavy Snowfall Disrupts Traffic, Closes Roads in Several Algerian Provinces

Algiers – Significant snowfall across several central provinces has caused major traffic disruptions, leading to the closure of key national and local roads, according to the National Gendarmerie. The heavy snow, which began falling overnight, has created hazardous conditions for drivers and commuters.

In Bouira province, National Route 33, connecting Bouira to Tizi Ouzou, is severely impacted. The areas of Tikjda (Asnam municipality) and Akouker (Bechloul municipality) are particularly affected, with heavy snow accumulation rendering the road impassable. National Route 30 at Tizi N’Koulane in the Saharidj municipality is also completely blocked due to the extreme weather conditions.

Authorities have also reported the closure of National Route 15, which links Bouira and Tizi Ouzou, specifically at Col Tirourda in the Aghbalou municipality. Rescue and clearing operations are facing challenges due to the continued snowfall.

Tizi Ouzou province is experiencing similar difficulties. National Route 33 is blocked between Boumahdi and the Asoul region, while National Route 15 at the Tirourda pass in the Iferhounène municipality is also closed. The impact extends to the local road network, with Provincial Road 253, connecting Tizi Ouzou and Bejaia, shut down, especially around the Chleta pass in the Illilten municipality where snow accumulation is most severe.

The National Gendarmerie is advising all travelers to exercise extreme caution and to postpone travel to mountainous regions if possible. They urge the public to wait until roads are cleared and maintenance teams have restored normal traffic flow. Motorists are also encouraged to stay informed about the latest road conditions and weather forecasts.
