Algeria Boasts Third of Africa’s Pharmaceutical Factories: Tebboune

Algiers – Algeria possesses approximately one-third of all pharmaceutical manufacturing plants on the African continent, according to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The President affirmed Algeria’s readiness to share its expertise with other African nations to bolster their own pharmaceutical production capabilities.

The statement was delivered on President Tebboune’s behalf by the Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Wassim Kouidri, during the opening of the African Ministerial Conference on Local Pharmaceutical Production and Health Technologies. The President highlighted that the World Health Organization’s (WHO) decision to select Algeria as the host for this inaugural continental event reflects international confidence in the nation’s healthcare capabilities and the progress achieved since 2020 in enhancing health security and promoting local production.

President Tebboune revealed that Algeria is home to approximately 230 pharmaceutical factories out of a total of 649 across Africa, representing over a third of the continent’s production capacity. Furthermore, there are more than 100 new pharmaceutical projects currently underway, positioning the country as a leading industrial hub in this strategically important sector.

The President emphasized that Algeria almost completely satisfies its domestic drug requirements and is capable of exporting surplus production to other African countries. He reiterated Algeria’s full commitment to providing African nations with the necessary expertise and knowledge to support their pharmaceutical manufacturing endeavors.

This initiative, according to President Tebboune, aligns with Algeria’s vision of building an integrated African health system based on local production and reduced external dependence. This approach seeks to ensure health security and strengthen the independence of pharmaceutical policies across the continent. The move aims to empower African nations and reduce reliance on foreign pharmaceutical imports.
