Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina Sentenced to 21 Years

Dhaka, Bangladesh – A court in Bangladesh has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to 21 years in prison on multiple corruption charges. The verdict was delivered on Thursday in Dhaka.

The court, presided over by Judge Abdullah Al-Mamun, found Hasina, 78, guilty of illegally acquiring land in the suburbs of Dhaka, the country’s largest city. The trial concluded in absentia.

“The conduct of the former Prime Minister…reveals a persistent inclination towards corruption, fueled by a sense of impunity, unchecked power, and a blatant greed for public assets,” the judge stated during the sentencing.

In addition to the sentence for Sheikh Hasina, her son and daughter were also sentenced to five years imprisonment in connection with the same corruption cases.

The sentencing marks a significant development in Bangladeshi politics and raises questions about the future of the Awami League, the political party formerly led by Sheikh Hasina. The implications of this ruling are expected to reverberate throughout the nation.

Further details surrounding the specific charges and evidence presented during the trial are expected to be released in the coming days. DZWatch will continue to provide updates on this developing story.
