The European Parliament has strongly condemned the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for egregious violations of international humanitarian law and human rights in Sudan. A resolution, overwhelmingly adopted with 503 votes in favor, 32 against, and 52 abstentions, highlights the severity of the situation.
The Parliament’s statement details a range of abuses, including indiscriminate attacks against civilians, violence targeting ethnic minorities, physical abuse, torture, deliberate starvation, the use of child soldiers, and attacks on hospitals and humanitarian facilities. Members of the European Parliament expressed concern that these actions could potentially constitute genocide.
MEPs voiced profound alarm over the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian conditions, emphasizing widespread famine across the country. They warned that the ongoing conflict is fueling what they described as one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters. The resolution urges the RSF to cease using starvation as a weapon of war and ensure unrestricted access for humanitarian aid. The Parliamentarians stressed the need to prioritize the needs of women and girls in efforts to address the conflict’s impact, given the prevalence of war-related violence against them.
The European Parliament reaffirmed its commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the legitimacy of the civilian government in Khartoum. It rejected the establishment of any parallel authorities in areas controlled by the RSF. The Parliament also condemned all forms of external interference that contribute to the escalation of the conflict, urging involved nations to adhere to the UN arms embargo. Furthermore, it expressed strong support for the efforts of the African Union and regional partners to advance the peace process.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF erupted in April 2023, triggering a severe humanitarian crisis, with over 12 million people displaced and tens of of thousands killed. DZWatch will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available. The international community is urged to act swiftly to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.
