Algiers, November 28, 2025 – A pivotal moment for the African pharmaceutical industry is anticipated today with the expected adoption of the “Algiers Declaration.” This landmark declaration is the culmination of the African Ministerial Conference on Local Pharmaceutical Production and Healthcare Technologies currently underway in Algiers.
The conference, held under the high patronage of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, will see African ministers formally endorse the “Algiers Declaration.” The declaration is poised to be a significant catalyst for the advancement of pharmaceutical manufacturing across the African continent, particularly amidst its rapidly evolving landscape.
The “Algiers Declaration” is expected to incorporate a comprehensive roadmap encompassing key areas such as innovation and technology transfer within the pharmaceutical sector. It aims to accelerate the development of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) continent-wide, enhance pandemic preparedness and response capabilities, and improve demand forecasting.
Several working sessions are scheduled throughout the day, led by experts and stakeholders at the Abdellatif Rahal International Conference Center, located west of the capital. The conference has drawn participation from ministers and representatives of the pharmaceutical and health sectors from approximately fifteen African nations.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by the Prime Minister, President Tebboune emphasized the critical importance of bolstering Africa’s pharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities. He underscored the need to localize pharmaceutical production to ensure Africa’s health security. President Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to the principles of African solidarity and regional integration, aligning with its vision of a strong and sovereign Africa. He further highlighted the aspiration to forge a unified Africa, integrated in its development and united by shared interests.
Under the theme “Local Pharmaceutical Industry for an Integrated and Strong Africa,” the conference is jointly organized by the Ministry of Pharmaceutical Industry and the Ministry of Health. The “Algiers Declaration” represents a crucial step towards realizing this vision.
