El Fasher, Sudan – A new investigation reveals a disturbing pattern of destruction targeting the healthcare system in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. The report details a campaign allegedly carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to dismantle medical facilities and intimidate healthcare workers.
The investigation suggests that the RSF’s actions began in the spring of last year and intensified as they gained control of the city. It is alleged that the RSF used drones to track the wounded, executed doctors, and shelled hospitals over the past 18 months.
According to the report, healthcare facilities in North Darfur have been attacked, damaged, or obstructed at least 130 times since the outbreak of the conflict. The RSF is reportedly responsible for at least 71% of these incidents, while the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) are implicated in 3%. The data indicates that at least 40 healthcare workers have been killed.
The report highlights the dire situation at the Saudi Hospital in El Fasher, which became the last functioning hospital in the region over a year ago. Attacks on the hospital escalated from artillery shelling to drone strikes, becoming almost daily occurrences in recent months. Medics reported being hunted by drones, forcing them to operate in trenches and homes. Ambulances have also been destroyed, leaving people to transport the wounded using handcarts or donkey-drawn carts, even as drones continued to pursue them.
