Algiers, Algeria – Algeria and Egypt have solidified their commitment to enhanced collaboration in the housing sector with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Cairo. The agreement was finalized on Wednesday during the ninth session of the Algerian-Egyptian Joint Higher Committee.
The MOU was signed by Algeria’s Minister of Housing, Urban Planning, and City, Mohamed Tarek Belaribi, and Egypt’s Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Dr. Rania Al-Mashat. It aims to foster cooperation in housing, urban development, and city planning through the exchange of experiences and expertise.
Key areas of focus include improving energy efficiency in buildings, integrating renewable energy sources into sustainable urban communities, and advancing research in concrete, materials, and construction technologies. The agreement also encompasses the sharing of knowledge between research institutions and technical laboratories in both countries.
DZWatch understands that the MOU seeks to bolster mechanisms for building management and maintenance, while also creating opportunities for joint projects in research, housing, urban planning systems, urban fabric, and city management. This includes potential collaborations on housing projects and the development of innovative urban solutions.
To ensure effective implementation, a joint coordination and follow-up committee will be established, comprising officials from relevant sectors. The committee will meet periodically, alternating between Algeria and Egypt, to monitor and support the on-the-ground execution of the MOU’s provisions.
This agreement follows closely on the heels of a similar MOU signed with Vietnam, underscoring the growing momentum of international cooperation in Algeria’s housing and urban development sectors. The Algerian government appears to be actively seeking partnerships to modernize its housing infrastructure and adopt sustainable urban planning practices.
