Algeria Implements Measures to Adapt to Climate Change

Algiers – Algeria has initiated a series of practical and organizational measures to adapt to the impacts of climate change, according to the Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Kouther Krikou. The announcement was made Saturday in Algiers.

The Minister emphasized the nation’s commitment to mitigating the effects of a changing climate through concrete actions. These measures include the construction of seawater desalination plants to address water scarcity issues exacerbated by rising temperatures and altered rainfall patterns.

Furthermore, Algeria is actively pursuing the expansion of the Green Dam project, a large-scale reforestation initiative designed to combat desertification and soil erosion. This ambitious project aims to create a natural barrier against the encroaching Sahara Desert, protecting agricultural lands and vital ecosystems. The Green Dam project has garnered international recognition, with the Arab League advocating for its replication across the Arab world.

The Ministry of Water Resources is playing a critical role in implementing these adaptive strategies, ensuring the efficient management and sustainable utilization of water resources. DZWatch understands that further details regarding specific timelines and budgetary allocations for these initiatives will be released in the coming weeks.

These actions underscore Algeria’s proactive approach to addressing the challenges posed by climate change and its dedication to building a more resilient future. The government views these measures as essential for safeguarding the nation’s natural resources, ensuring food security, and protecting the well-being of its citizens.
