Algiers – The President of the African Parliament, Fortune Charumbira, is currently undertaking an official visit to Algeria. He was received by Salima Bakhata Mansouri, the Secretary of State to the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs in charge of African Affairs, on Saturday.
The visit coincides with Charumbira’s participation in the International Conference on the Criminalization of Colonialism in Africa and the Issue of Reparations. This significant conference is an initiative spearheaded by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The initiative was adopted during the African Union summit of Heads of State and Government held in February 2025, marking a pivotal continental step towards achieving justice for Africans and people of African descent.
During the meeting between Mansouri and Charumbira, discussions centered on strengthening cooperation between Algeria and the African Parliament. Both parties explored avenues to enhance the Parliament’s role in advocating for the continent’s just causes. Key issues discussed included the Palestinian cause and the Western Sahara issue.
Furthermore, they addressed the importance of supporting continental efforts aimed at addressing the lasting effects of colonialism and demanding reparations. The discussions also highlighted the need to amplify the voice of African peoples within both the continental and international systems. This visit underscores Algeria’s commitment to Pan-Africanism and its active role in shaping the continent’s future.
Algeria continues to play a leading role in advocating for African solutions to African problems and promoting unity and solidarity across the continent. The International Conference on the Criminalization of Colonialism and the Issue of Reparations represents a crucial step in this ongoing effort.
