Water Sector Committed to National Flood Prevention Strategy

Algiers, Algeria – The Minister of Water Resources, Mr. Taha Derbal, affirmed the sector’s unwavering commitment to implementing the national strategy for flood prevention. This announcement was made during a study day focused on ‘Flood Prevention in the Context of Adaptation to Climate Change in Algeria,’ held at the National School of Administration in Algiers on Saturday.

The event, organized by the Ministry of Environment and Quality of Life in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), provided a platform for discussing critical measures to mitigate flood risks across the country.

In his address, Minister Derbal emphasized the importance of activating and executing the national flood prevention strategy through the development of local plans dedicated to managing natural hazards. He announced the launch of several new projects aimed at improving the infrastructure of wadis (seasonal rivers) and waterways. These projects will include enhanced hydrological studies and regular campaigns to clear watercourses of sediment and obstructions, ensuring the protection of public water resources.

‘Effective flood prevention requires a shared vision and sustainable preventative measures,’ Minister Derbal stated, highlighting the necessity for strengthened coordination among various relevant sectors to safeguard citizens and property.

The Minister also lauded the organization of the study day, recognizing it as a significant boost to national efforts aimed at reducing the risks associated with flooding, particularly in light of the growing challenges posed by climate change.

The Ministry of Water Resources is dedicated to proactively addressing the increasing threats posed by climate change and ensuring the safety and well-being of Algerian citizens through comprehensive flood prevention measures.
