Petkovic Grants Leverkusen’s Request for Mazza Delay

Algiers – The Algerian national football team is gearing up for its preparatory camp ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Morocco from December 21st to January 18th. Special attention is being paid to the inclusion of its professional players, notably young international Ibrahim Mazza (20), a player for Bayer Leverkusen in Germany. Mazza’s presence is considered pivotal by the coaching staff due to his consistent performance with his club.

Bayer Leverkusen has formally requested that Mazza be allowed to delay his arrival to the national team’s camp. The German club seeks to ensure Mazza’s participation in their Champions League match against Newcastle United, followed by a Bundesliga fixture against FC Koln.

The Algerian Football Federation, after consulting with national team coach Vladimir Petkovic, has granted the request. This decision reflects the good relationship between the federation and the German club, and aims to avoid any tension that could potentially affect the player’s future.

The importance of Mazza to Leverkusen is underscored by the confidence placed in him by coach Xabi Alonso. Mazza has become a key player for the team, delivering impressive performances, notably his outstanding display against Manchester City. This performance drew direct praise from Pep Guardiola and has significantly boosted his profile on the European stage.

Petkovic is counting on Mazza to bolster the Desert Foxes’ attack. He is hoping that Mazza’s dynamism will provide a significant boost to the team, especially after the national team’s disappointing results in the last two editions held in Cameroon and Cote d’Ivoire. The coaching staff aims to capitalize on the player’s momentum to enhance the team’s options and deliver greater effectiveness in the upcoming continental tournament.

The national team camp is scheduled to commence on December 15th at the Sidi Moussa center in Algiers. The timing was carefully chosen to accommodate the commitments of European professionals involved in matches on the 9th, 10th, and 11th of the same month. Some players from Arab leagues may join the camp earlier, due to the suspension of their respective leagues.
