Algiers, Algeria – Azouz Nasseri, President of the Council of the Nation, received Chief Fortune Charumbira, President of the Pan-African Parliament, at the Council headquarters on Saturday. The visit underscores a commitment to bolstering cooperation between Algeria and African Union institutions.
Nasseri emphasized that the visit reflects the robust relationship between Algeria and the continental parliamentary system. He affirmed that collaboration with the Pan-African Parliament is a strategic choice, mirroring Algeria’s longstanding dedication to supporting African unity and solidarity.
The President of the Council of the Nation highlighted Algeria’s desire to enhance its presence within the Pan-African Parliament. Key areas of focus include supporting peace and security, sustainable development, institutional reform, and the promotion of good governance across Africa. Furthermore, Algeria aims to coordinate legislative efforts with other national parliaments and align with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 objectives, encompassing security, economic integration, energy transition, and the empowerment of youth and women.
Chief Fortune Charumbira expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and hospitality. He lauded Algeria’s leading role in supporting African Union institutions, particularly the Pan-African Parliament, since its inception. He also commended the Algerian Parliament’s active participation in the Pan-African Parliament’s work, noting the valuable contributions of members from both the Council of the Nation and the National People’s Assembly to continental discussions and policy formulation.
The President of the Pan-African Parliament stressed that strengthening cooperation with the Algerian Parliament is pivotal for reinforcing continental parliamentary action. He advocated for expanded exchange of legislative expertise and experiences, as well as intensified coordination to forge unified positions within African Union institutions. Charumbira also acknowledged Algeria’s African policy under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, describing it as a forward-looking vision aimed at elevating the continent, ensuring African unity, and empowering Africa to determine its own destiny.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to promoting cooperation mechanisms at both bilateral and continental levels. They pledged to unite parliamentary efforts to support Africa’s strategic issues, emphasizing continued coordination between the Algerian Parliament and the Pan-African Parliament to build a unified, stable, and prosperous continent. Further discussions are planned to solidify these commitments in the coming months.
