AU Commissioner Urges Unified African Front Against Colonialism

Algiers – Africans must unite in their efforts to criminalize colonialism, African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Bankole Adeoye, declared today in Algiers.

Speaking at the International Conference on Colonial Crimes in Africa, Commissioner Adeoye emphasized the critical need for a cohesive and unified approach across the continent to address the lasting legacies of colonial rule. He asserted that a united front is essential to effectively pursue legal avenues and hold accountable those responsible for the injustices and atrocities committed during the colonial era.

“The time has come for Africa to speak with one voice and demand justice for the historical wrongs inflicted upon our people,” Adeoye stated. “We must work together to ensure that colonialism is recognized as a crime against humanity and that those who perpetrated these crimes are held responsible.”

The Commissioner’s remarks highlight the growing momentum across the African continent to confront the historical injustices of colonialism and to seek reparations for the damage inflicted upon African societies. The International Conference on Colonial Crimes in Africa, held in Algiers, serves as a platform for experts, policymakers, and activists to discuss strategies for achieving these goals.

The call for unity comes at a time when many African nations are grappling with the ongoing effects of colonial policies, including economic exploitation, political instability, and social fragmentation. Experts believe that a unified approach is necessary to overcome these challenges and to build a more prosperous and equitable future for the continent.

The conference continues tomorrow with discussions focusing on specific case studies of colonial crimes and exploring potential legal mechanisms for pursuing justice. The outcome of the conference is expected to contribute to a stronger, more unified African position on the issue of colonialism and its enduring consequences.
