Algerian Cabinet Approves Minimum Wage and Unemployment Benefit Increase

Algiers, Algeria – The Algerian Council of Ministers, under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has approved an increase to both the guaranteed minimum wage and unemployment benefits, according to an official statement released earlier today.

The Council has decided to raise the national minimum wage from 20,000 Algerian Dinars to 24,000 Algerian Dinars, effective January 2026. This increase marks a significant adjustment, being the largest single rise in the minimum wage in decades. The last increase was implemented in 2020 and amounted to 2,000 Algerian Dinars.

In addition to the minimum wage adjustment, the Council also approved an increase in unemployment benefits, raising them from 15,000 Algerian Dinars to 18,000 Algerian Dinars. This measure aims to provide enhanced support for unemployed citizens actively seeking work.

President Tebboune has instructed the Minister of Labor to review the requirement for unemployed individuals to renew their benefit applications every six months. He emphasized that the Council has established a minimum benefit period of one year, with the possibility of renewal.

The President further directed the Minister of Labor to ensure that the National Employment Agency (ANEM) fulfills its mandate effectively. He stressed the importance of ANEM serving as a transparent and efficient resource for job seekers, facilitating the matching of individuals with available employment opportunities and maintaining an updated national database to differentiate between employed and unemployed citizens.

Furthermore, President Tebboune has tasked the Minister of Labor with submitting proposals for increasing pensions and retirement benefits. These proposals will be reviewed by the Ministry of Finance and subsequently by the Government Council before being presented to the Council of Ministers for final approval at a future session.
