Algerian FM Attaf Meets UN Peacekeeping Chief Ahead of Oran Process

Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, received Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, on Sunday. The meeting occurred on the eve of the 12th session of the “Oran Process” on Peace and Security in Africa, scheduled for December 1st and 2nd.

According to a statement released by the Ministry, the discussions centered on the evolving security landscape in Africa and the challenges these developments pose to peacekeeping operations. The ministry highlighted peacekeeping as a crucial aspect of the United Nations’ commitment to the African continent.

“The two parties exchanged views on the situation in the Sahel region, as well as the latest developments related to the Western Sahara issue,” the statement added. The meeting provided an opportunity to address pressing regional concerns and explore potential avenues for collaboration in maintaining peace and stability.

The Oran Process, an Algerian initiative, serves as a platform for dialogue and cooperation on security issues facing African nations. The upcoming session is expected to bring together representatives from across the continent to discuss strategies for addressing conflict, promoting development, and enhancing regional security cooperation. The discussions with Mr. Lacroix underscore Algeria’s active role in promoting peace and security within Africa, and its commitment to working with the United Nations to address shared challenges.
