Former U.S. President Donald Trump expressed optimism regarding the possibility of a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine following recent U.S.-Ukraine discussions in Florida. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump stated that he believes there is a “good chance” for a deal to be reached.
Trump acknowledged that Ukraine faces “some difficult small problems,” and that the ongoing corruption issues within the country are “not helpful.” This statement alludes to the recent dismissal of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff, who also headed the negotiating team, amidst a corruption investigation.
While Trump did not directly address whether the corruption case would impede peace talks, he reiterated his belief that both Russia and Ukraine are motivated to end the conflict.
He further confirmed that his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. However, a specific date for the meeting was not disclosed.
The discussions in Florida involved U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Steve Witkoff, and other U.S. government officials meeting with a Ukrainian delegation to discuss a potential peace plan for Ukraine. The U.S. continues to play a role in facilitating dialogue between the two nations.
