Africa Moves Towards Justice for Colonial Crimes

Algiers, Algeria – The international conference on colonial crimes in Africa is continuing for its second day at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Center in Algiers. The conference is focused on addressing the legacy of colonialism and charting a path towards justice and reparations.

Today’s agenda includes workshops examining the profound impact of colonialism on the economies and cultures of African nations. Experts and delegates from across the continent are participating in discussions aimed at formulating concrete strategies for addressing the lingering effects of historical injustices.

A key outcome of the conference will be the adoption of the “Algiers Declaration.” This declaration is envisioned as a continental framework for highlighting colonial crimes, acknowledging their lasting consequences, and developing a comprehensive African strategy for justice and reparations. The Algiers Declaration will be presented to the African Union summit in February 2026 for consideration and ratification.

This significant continental event follows a decision made at the African Union Heads of State and Government summit last February. The summit endorsed the initiative of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to organize a conference dedicated to celebrating and implementing the African Union’s theme for 2025: “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations.”

The conference aims to foster collective reflection and action with the goal of criminalizing colonialism, slavery, and apartheid as crimes against humanity, in accordance with relevant African Union recommendations. This initiative represents a crucial step towards achieving restorative justice for the historical wrongs inflicted upon the African continent.
