Algiers has issued a strong warning against the potential for replicating past African crises in more severe and dangerous forms. The call came during the opening of the twelfth session of the ‘Oran Process’ on Peace and Security in Africa.
Algeria urged African nations to renew their commitment to crafting African solutions to the continent’s challenges. The nation emphasized the importance of advocating with a unified voice for Africa’s priorities within the UN Security Council and other multilateral international forums. Continued efforts to end Africa’s marginalization in international decision-making centers were also stressed.
Ahmed Attaf, Algeria’s Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs, inaugurated the session and conveyed the greetings of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who supports the Oran Process. Attaf highlighted the significant challenges facing the African continent in the current international climate.
“The current international situation is not ordinary,” Attaf stated, describing it as “deeply troubled, polarized, and conflict-ridden… a situation that undermines the gains humanity has made since the dawn of history.” He specifically mentioned international law, multilateralism, and the United Nations as crucial achievements under threat.
Attaf also lauded the progress made since the inception of the ‘Oran Process,’ which has become a regular fixture on the agenda of the African Union and the African Union’s Peace and Security Council. He expressed pride in the unified stance of the three African nations on the UN Security Council – Algeria, Somalia, and Sierra Leone. He emphasized that this bloc is now recognized and respected for its positions and perspectives, allowing the continent to advocate for its priorities with a united voice within the UN Security Council.
“Algeria has always been an active participant in this endeavor,” Attaf affirmed, “both as the host country of the Oran Process and as a member of the UN Security Council and the African Union’s Peace and Security Council.” Algeria is committed to working alongside Somalia and Sierra Leone to further these goals.
