Bejaia, Algeria – Sonatrach has announced that the Tighermert seawater desalination plant in Bejaia province has reached its full operational capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per day.
This milestone follows the completion of all technical protocols established since the plant’s initial operation in June 2025. The gradual increase in production capacity was implemented with precision and in accordance with international standards, with particular attention paid to ensuring the safety and efficiency of equipment.
The Tighermert desalination plant, located in the municipality of Toudja, was built by the National Canal Company, a Sonatrach subsidiary. It is one of five similar plants included in the President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s supplementary national program, initiated in 2022, to meet the drinking water needs of citizens and enhance the country’s water security.
The Tighermert plant will contribute to meeting the drinking water needs of the population of Bejaia, as well as the provinces of Setif, Bouira, and Bordj Bou Arreridj.
Through its subsidiary, the Algerian Water Desalination Company, Sonatrach affirms its commitment to actively contributing to ensuring the sustainability of water resources and its determination to continue implementing projects that support national water security in the face of prevailing regional and international climate and environmental challenges. This achievement underscores Sonatrach’s vital role in Algeria’s infrastructure development and its dedication to addressing critical resource needs.
