Brussels – This week could prove pivotal for diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine, according to a top European Union official. Kaya Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, emphasized the importance of ongoing negotiations during a meeting of EU defense ministers on Monday.
“This could be a crucial week for diplomacy,” Kallas stated. “We heard yesterday that discussions in the United States were difficult but productive. We have no idea of the results yet, but I will speak today to the Ukrainian Minister of Defense, and also to the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs.”
Kallas reiterated the EU’s stance on increasing pressure on Russia through the implementation of further sanctions. She also advocated for exploring the possibility of making frozen Russian state assets, currently held under European sanctions, available to Kyiv as a loan.
Furthermore, Kallas called for increased military, financial, and humanitarian support for Ukraine, emphasizing the need to enable the country to “withstand and prevail” in the face of ongoing challenges. The EU continues to play a central role in coordinating international efforts to support Ukraine and find a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
The coming days are expected to be crucial as diplomats from various nations engage in intensive discussions to explore potential pathways towards de-escalation and a lasting peace agreement. The focus remains on finding a solution that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. DZWatch will continue to provide updates as this critical situation unfolds.
