Bejaia, Algeria – The Tighremt Seawater Desalination Plant, located in the wilaya of Bejaia, has commenced full-capacity production, according to an announcement from Sonatrach. The plant is now operating at its maximum output of 300,000 cubic meters per day.
Sonatrach stated that this milestone follows the successful completion of all technical protocols established since the plant’s initial startup in June 2025. The gradual increase in production capacity was executed with precision and in adherence to international standards, particularly those related to equipment safety and efficiency.
The Tighremt plant, situated in the commune of Toudja, was constructed by the National Canal Company, a subsidiary of Sonatrach. It is one of five similar plants included in the supplementary national program initiated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in 2022. This program aims to address the drinking water needs of citizens and enhance the nation’s water security.
The Tighremt plant will contribute significantly to meeting the potable water demands of the population in Bejaia, as well as the wilayas of Setif, Bouira, and Bordj Bou Arreridj.
Through its subsidiary, the Algerian Water Desalination Company, Sonatrach affirmed its commitment to actively contributing to the sustainability of water resources. The company also expressed its determination to continue implementing projects that support national water security in the face of prevailing climate and environmental challenges, both regionally and internationally.
