Algiers – Africa must proactively address the legacy of colonial crimes through a comprehensive political strategy, rather than remain in a reactive posture. This statement was made by Ms. Salma Bakhta Mansouri, Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, responsible for African Affairs, on Monday evening.
Speaking on the issue, Ms. Mansouri emphasized the need for a unified African approach, transforming the discourse surrounding colonial injustices into a platform for political action and asserting the continent’s agency on the global stage. She highlighted that simply responding to historical grievances is insufficient; Africa must take the initiative in shaping the narrative and demanding accountability.
The Secretary of State’s remarks come amidst growing calls within Africa for a more robust and coordinated strategy to address the lasting consequences of colonialism. These consequences include economic disparities, political instability, and cultural fragmentation. The ongoing dialogue aims to identify concrete steps that African nations can take collectively to rectify these historical wrongs and build a more equitable future.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, along with African Affairs bodies, are actively involved in shaping this new strategy. Discussions are underway to formulate specific policies and initiatives that will empower African nations to take ownership of their history and demand redress for the injustices of the past.
The focus is shifting towards developing a long-term vision that prioritizes restorative justice, economic empowerment, and the preservation of African cultural heritage. This integrated approach aims to ensure that Africa not only acknowledges the past but also actively shapes its future, free from the lingering shadows of colonialism. The move signifies a determined effort to place Africa at the forefront of its own destiny.
