Algeria Prioritizes HIV/AIDS Prevention as National Goal

Algiers, December 1, 2025 – Algeria remains firmly committed to achieving the global 95-95-95 targets and eradicating HIV/AIDS by 2030, according to Minister of Health, Mohamed Seddik Ait Messoudane. Speaking at an event commemorating World AIDS Day, the Minister emphasized that HIV/AIDS prevention and control remains a top national priority.

In a speech delivered by the Ministry’s Secretary-General, Mohamed Talehi, in Algiers, the Minister stated that recent efforts to bolster monitoring, detection, and care, while ensuring access to antiretroviral treatment, are supported by over 95% of the state budget. He underscored that this progress would not have been possible without the dedication of healthcare professionals, institutional partners, community organizations, and all stakeholders in the field, urging them to maintain and strengthen this momentum within the 2024-2028 National Strategic Plan.

Furthermore, Minister Ait Messoudane highlighted a pivotal national priority: the triple elimination of vertical transmission of HIV, Hepatitis B, and Syphilis. He noted that this ambitious goal is within Algeria’s reach due to the availability of strong foundations, including high coverage through vaccination programs, enhanced maternal health programs, increased integration of screening into reproductive health services, and the continuous recruitment of healthcare teams in the field.

The Minister added that the triple elimination initiative represents a powerful indicator of public health, a symbol of equality and protection for future generations, and a key element in the qualitative transformation of the national healthcare system. This initiative is crucial for ensuring a healthy future for all Algerians.

Ait Messoudane also addressed several ongoing challenges that require vigilance, such as risky behaviors, low usage of protective measures, intravenous drug use, and migration patterns. Continued efforts are needed to address these issues effectively.
