Algiers, Algeria – Members of the A3+ group convened a consultative meeting in Algiers today, bringing together current members and incoming states set to begin their terms on the United Nations Security Council in January.
The meeting included representatives from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Bahrain, Colombia, and Latvia, all of whom will soon join the Security Council. The gathering was held at the initiative of Algeria, the current coordinator of the A3+ group, and took place on the sidelines of the 12th High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa, known as the “Oran Process.”
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting provided a valuable platform for constructive dialogue between outgoing and incoming A3+ members. Discussions centered on a range of issues, facilitating the exchange of perspectives and the sharing of experiences related to enhancing cooperation among elected members of the Security Council.
The Algerian initiative aims to solidify the A3+’s role as a unified voice advocating for African interests. This includes sharing the successes achieved through this mechanism with new members, utilizing the “Oran Process,” which Algeria hosts annually, as a key platform for collaboration and knowledge transfer.
The A3+ group plays a crucial role in representing African perspectives within the UN Security Council, and this meeting underscores Algeria’s commitment to fostering effective collaboration and ensuring a strong African voice on the global stage. By bringing together experienced and new members, the consultative meeting aimed to facilitate a smooth transition and ensure continued advocacy for African priorities within the UN system.
