Algiers – Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, delivered a powerful message during the opening of the 12th session of the Oran Process on Peace and Security in Africa. The event, held in Oran, Algeria, marks a significant moment for the continent’s collaborative efforts in addressing security challenges.
Minister Attaf emphasized the symbolic importance of returning to Oran, the birthplace of the initiative twelve years ago. He stated that this return is not merely a symbolic gesture but a crucial opportunity to assess the progress made in African joint action. He highlighted how the principles established in Oran have evolved into practical mechanisms within the United Nations, leading to tangible outcomes in Security Council resolutions. This, according to the Minister, reflects the success of the vision that launched the initiative.
Attaf pointed to three key achievements that demonstrate the maturity and success of the Oran Process. Firstly, the Oran Process has become a fixed continental event on the agenda of the African Union and the Peace and Security Council, underscoring its importance as a platform for strategic dialogue among member states. Secondly, he noted the qualitative shift among the three African member states of the Security Council, which now form a unified bloc with a cohesive and influential voice. This unified stance allows them to effectively contribute to discussions related to international peace and security.
The third achievement highlighted by the Minister is the unprecedented stature the continent has attained within the Security Council. This is attributed to the unified efforts of its representatives, who speak with a single voice representing the collective African position, rather than relying on fragmented national perspectives that previously weakened the continental presence within the UN. This unity has been instrumental in amplifying Africa’s influence on global security matters.
Minister Attaf commended the commitment of African countries to the Oran Process and their dedication to achieving its objectives. He acknowledged the contributions of all African nations that have held seats on the Security Council since the initiative’s inception, stressing that these successes would not have been possible without collective engagement. He also reiterated Algeria’s pivotal role as the sponsoring nation of the Oran Process and as a member of the Security Council, underscoring the nation’s continued commitment to fostering peace and security across the African continent.
