Algiers, December 2, 2025 – A high-level summit on peace and security in Africa, the ‘Oran Process,’ concluded today in Algiers, highlighting critical security and political challenges facing the continent. The summit, officially the 12th of its kind, was deemed to have a unique significance and impact.
Ahmed Attaf, Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad and African Affairs, emphasized the importance of the gathering. He noted that the discussions shed light on pressing issues demanding immediate attention and collective responsibility. Minister Attaf identified a concerning trio of interconnected threats dominating the African security landscape: unconstitutional changes of government, the scourge of terrorism, and foreign interference.
According to Minister Attaf, unconstitutional changes of government have become alarmingly frequent in Africa. He pointed out that the African Union has recently been compelled to suspend the membership of two nations within a mere 42-day period. The threat of terrorism has also escalated, particularly in the Sahel region, where terrorist groups have seized control of vast territories and established de facto rule.
The Minister further highlighted the pervasive influence of foreign interference in numerous African conflicts and crises. He asserted that external actors have often become key decision-makers, overshadowing the role of local stakeholders in resolving disputes.
Amidst these challenges, Minister Attaf lauded the summit’s discussions, which underscored the urgent need for the African Union to reassert itself as a central player in crisis prevention and conflict resolution. He stressed that the principle of African solutions to African problems is not merely an aspiration but a strategic imperative, crucial for shielding the continent from the dangers of current international polarization. He added that strengthening the relationship is important and that the location of the summit is not a coincidence.
The summit served as a critical platform for dialogue and collaboration, aiming to forge a path towards a more secure and stable future for Africa. DZWatch will continue to provide in-depth coverage of developments related to peace and security initiatives across the continent.
