Algiers, Algeria – Algerian journalist Saad Bouakba has been released from prison today following a court ruling in a case involving comments he made regarding historical events.
The Bir Mourad Rais court sentenced Bouakba to a three-year suspended prison sentence and a fine of one million dinars. This ruling effectively led to his immediate release.
The case stemmed from a complaint filed by the daughter of former President Ahmed Ben Bella. The complaint alleged that Bouakba’s statements on historical issues contained false information that defamed the late president. The prosecution brought charges of insulting and defaming national liberation revolution symbols using information and communication technologies. He was also charged with deliberately spreading false news to the public.
In a related development, the manager of the “Ru’ya” platform, Harawi Abdel Halim, also received a one-year suspended prison sentence and a fine of 500,000 dinars. The court ordered the permanent closure of the platform and the confiscation of its equipment.
The rulings have sparked debate about freedom of expression and the limitations placed on commentary regarding historical figures and events within Algeria. The case highlights the sensitivities surrounding the interpretation of Algeria’s history and the potential legal repercussions for those who challenge established narratives.
