A permanent peace agreement has been signed between the government of the Amhara region in Ethiopia and the Fano militia, a prominent Amhara group. The signing ceremony was attended by Ambassador Salma Malika Hadadi, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
The agreement follows extensive negotiations between the two parties, facilitated under the auspices of the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). Ambassador Hadadi hailed the agreement as a significant step forward for the future of Ethiopia.
“Today is a historic day for peace for the people of our region,” stated Arega Kebede, President of the Amhara Regional State. He emphasized that “there are no winners or losers in any conflict. Peace serves everyone, and this agreement will provide great relief to a population yearning for peace.” Kebede also expressed the government’s gratitude to all who responded to the call of the people and government and engaged in establishing a lasting peace.
Masresha Sete, the leader who signed the agreement on behalf of the Fano militia, stated that dialogue and negotiation are the solution to resolving any conflict. He added that resolving problems and disagreements through discussion is a wise act and not a political failure.
This agreement represents a crucial step towards stability in the Amhara region, which has experienced periods of unrest and conflict. The commitment to peaceful resolution by both the regional government and the Fano militia offers hope for a more secure and prosperous future for the region’s inhabitants.
