TIMIMOUN, Algeria – The 7th International Desert Tourism Festival commenced today in Timimoun, Algeria, under the theme “Timimoun…Authentic Tourism and Hospitality.” The Minister of Tourism and Traditional Industry, Houria Meddahi, presided over the opening ceremony, marking a significant event for the region and the country’s tourism sector.
The festival, held under the patronage of the Algerian Prime Minister, saw the attendance of government officials, state representatives, and members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Algeria. This edition highlights the Algerian government’s commitment to promoting desert tourism as a key driver of local development, wealth creation, and job opportunities, aligning with the nation’s new economic vision.
Minister Meddahi emphasized that desert tourism extends beyond mere economic activity; it represents a cultural and humanitarian message. She highlighted Algeria’s ability to balance sustainable development with the preservation of its unique identity. The festival serves as a platform for exchanging tourism experiences, blending tradition with modernity, and showcasing the beauty, natural heritage, cultural diversity, and hospitality of the Algerian Sahara to the world.
“Our southern regions are not just geographical spaces, but hold exceptional natural treasures, blending historical and cultural heritage that testifies to an ancient civilization spanning thousands of years,” Minister Meddahi stated.
She commended the efforts of all stakeholders who contributed to presenting an authentic cultural image and establishing the desert tourism season as a significant annual event, attracting a considerable number of tourists from both within Algeria and abroad.
The Minister noted the increasing dynamism of the tourism sector, particularly desert tourism, driven by recent measures such as visa facilitation, increased air travel, and improved infrastructure including hotels and hospitality facilities. As of September 30, 2025, the hotel capacity in the southern provinces is estimated at 225 hotel establishments, providing approximately 19,978 beds.
The festival promises a diverse program of activities, cultural performances, and exhibitions, designed to immerse visitors in the rich heritage and traditions of the Algerian Sahara.
