The Palestinian Presidency issued a strong warning Friday regarding the deteriorating conditions of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons. They cited egregious violations of human rights and dignity, posing a significant threat to the prisoners’ lives, in blatant disregard of international laws and conventions, including the Fourth Geneva Convention.
According to a statement released by the Palestinian News Agency (WAFA), the Presidency condemned the ongoing abuse and punitive measures inflicted upon Marwan Barghouti, a member of the Fatah Central Committee. The Presidency holds the Israeli occupation fully responsible for his safety and the well-being of all prisoners within its detention facilities.
The statement emphasized that the continued violations against prisoners constitute a war crime, reflecting a systematic policy of mistreatment aimed at breaking their will and collectively punishing them. These actions demonstrate a clear disregard for international humanitarian law.
The Palestinian Presidency urgently appealed to the international community, international human rights organizations, and the International Committee of the Red Cross to immediately fulfill their legal and humanitarian responsibilities. They called for immediate pressure on Israel to cease these violations and ensure international protection for the prisoners. The Presidency reiterated its commitment to working towards the release of all prisoners, with a particular focus on the release of leader Marwan Barghouti.
The statement concluded by underscoring the urgent need for international intervention to safeguard the rights and well-being of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli custody, emphasizing that the current situation demands immediate and decisive action. The Presidency vowed to continue its efforts to secure the release of all Palestinian prisoners.
