US Supreme Court to Review Trump’s Citizenship Order

Washington D.C. – The United States Supreme Court has agreed to review the constitutionality of a controversial executive order issued under the Trump administration concerning birthright citizenship. The decision, announced Friday, sets the stage for a potential landmark ruling on immigration law.

The court, which currently holds a conservative majority, stated in a brief announcement that it would hear an appeal from the previous administration regarding lower court rulings. The specific details of the cases under review were not immediately disclosed. The executive order in question aimed to limit the automatic granting of citizenship to children born in the United States to parents who are not legal residents or citizens.

The order sought to prevent the federal government from issuing passports or certificates of citizenship to children whose mothers were in the U.S. unlawfully or temporarily, and whose parents did not possess U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.

Civil liberties organizations have strongly opposed the measure. The legal director of one prominent organization stated that they were eager for the Supreme Court to definitively resolve the matter. She emphasized that federal courts have consistently ruled against the executive order, deeming it unconstitutional and in conflict with both a Supreme Court decision from 1898 and a law enacted by Congress.

The Supreme Court is expected to hear oral arguments in the case next year. A final decision is anticipated by the end of June, setting the stage for significant legal and political ramifications depending on the court’s ruling. The case has reignited a long-standing debate about the interpretation of the 14th Amendment and its implications for immigration policy in the United States.
