Judiciary Reform: Algeria Embarks on New Era of Judicial Power

Algiers – Minister of Justice, Keeper of the Seals, Mr. Lotfi Boujemaa, stated today in Algiers that the revision of the organic law containing the fundamental law of the judiciary is in line with the 2020 Constitution, aiming to establish a new phase for judicial authority in Algeria.

The Justice Ministry emphasized that this review is a crucial step in modernizing the judicial system and ensuring its independence and efficiency. The amendments are expected to address several key areas, including the appointment and promotion of judges, disciplinary procedures, and the overall management of the courts.

“This review is not merely a procedural update, but a fundamental shift towards a more robust and independent judiciary,” stated Minister Boujemaa during a press conference. “It reflects the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring fair and equitable justice for all citizens.”

The revised law is also expected to incorporate international best practices in judicial governance and promote greater transparency and accountability within the judicial system. This includes measures to enhance public access to court proceedings and information, as well as strengthening mechanisms for addressing complaints against judicial officers.

Sources within the ministry indicate that the proposed changes have been the subject of extensive consultations with judges, lawyers, academics, and civil society organizations. The goal is to ensure that the revised law reflects a broad consensus and effectively addresses the challenges facing the Algerian judiciary. The revised law is expected to be submitted to Parliament for approval in the coming weeks.

The move signals a significant commitment to strengthening the separation of powers and fostering greater public trust in the judicial system. The government hopes that these reforms will contribute to a more stable and prosperous Algeria.
