Bank of Algeria Clarifies Foreign Exchange Allowance Rules

Algiers, December 7, 2025 – The Bank of Algeria today issued a clarification regarding the foreign exchange allowance available to Algerian citizens for travel abroad.

According to a statement released by the central bank, the allowance, which was recently increased to €750 for adults and €300 for minors following a presidential decree, is available to all resident Algerian citizens once per reference year.

“In implementing the President of the Republic’s decision to increase the foreign exchange allowance for travel to €750 for adult citizens and €300 for minor citizens, the Bank of Algeria reminds the public that Instruction No. 05-2025, dated July 17, 2025, concerning the right to foreign exchange for travel abroad, stipulates that this right is available to every resident Algerian citizen once per the reference year defined in the aforementioned instruction,” the statement read.

The Bank of Algeria further clarified that the reference year extends from July 20th to July 19th of each year.

The statement emphasized that the foreign exchange allowance is granted exclusively to the actual beneficiary. Instruction No. 05-2025, particularly Article 10, prohibits and penalizes any maneuver aimed at diverting the use of the foreign exchange allowance amount, in accordance with applicable legislation. The Bank of Algeria is committed to ensuring the proper use of these funds and preventing any abuse of the system.

This clarification aims to provide citizens with a clear understanding of their rights and obligations regarding the foreign exchange allowance for travel, ensuring transparency and preventing misuse.
