Restoration of Sacred Heart Cathedral Begins in Algiers

Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments, Youcef Belmahdi, officially launched the restoration project of the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Algiers during a working visit to the capital on Sunday. The Minister was received at the Wilaya headquarters by the Wali of Algiers, Mohamed Abdenour Rabhi, the President of the People’s Provincial Assembly, local authorities, and Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco.

During the visit, Minister Belmahdi, accompanied by the Wali, inspected the cathedral renovation project. He received detailed explanations regarding the various stages of the restoration process before formally inaugurating the commencement of the works. This initiative falls under the national efforts aimed at preserving the shared religious heritage of Algeria.

The Minister also inspected the ongoing restoration project of the Sidi Mohamed Cherif Mosque in the Upper Casbah. This mosque is currently undergoing comprehensive restoration work to revitalize its historical and architectural significance.

In a statement to the media, Minister Belmahdi emphasized that this visit is in line with the directives of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, which prioritize the care, preservation, and restoration of historical and religious landmarks. The government is committed to safeguarding Algeria’s rich cultural and religious inheritance.

It is worth noting that the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Endowments has recently received a significant number of restored historical mosques in the provinces of Algiers and Constantine. This reflects the state’s ongoing strategy to protect and enhance the country’s religious and historical legacy.

These restoration projects are vital for maintaining the integrity of Algeria’s cultural landscape and ensuring that these important sites continue to serve as places of worship and historical significance for future generations.
