Contaminated Chili Paste: 73 Tons Destroyed in Algiers Raid

Authorities in Algiers have dismantled an illegal operation producing contaminated chili paste, seizing and destroying over 73 tons of the product. The raid, conducted by the National Gendarmerie in Ain Kahla, Rouiba, uncovered a clandestine workshop operating in unsanitary conditions, posing a significant risk to public health.

According to a statement released by the National Gendarmerie, the operation targeted a farm suspected of housing the illicit production facility. Upon inspection, officers discovered large plastic barrels filled with chili paste emitting a foul odor. A total of 687 large barrels, containing over 73 tons of the product, were found. The facility lacked basic sanitary conditions, with widespread filth and a complete disregard for proper storage procedures, despite the product being intended for human consumption.

All barrels of chili paste were seized, with an estimated total value exceeding 8,830,000 Algerian Dinars. The entire seized quantity was subsequently destroyed to prevent it from reaching consumers. Legal proceedings are now underway against the perpetrators. They face charges including operating a commercial enterprise in unsanitary and unsuitable conditions, failing to comply with storage regulations, lacking a commercial registration, violating hygiene standards, possessing spoiled food intended for human consumption, and operating a classified facility without a permit.
