EU Official: US Remains Europe’s Strongest Ally Despite Criticism

Doha, Qatar – Despite recent criticisms leveled against European institutions in the new US national security strategy, a top European Union foreign policy official affirmed that the United States remains Europe’s most significant ally.

Speaking at the Doha Forum on Saturday, Kaja Kallas, a leading voice on EU foreign policy, addressed concerns raised by the strategy document released by Washington. While acknowledging the presence of criticism, she stated, “Of course there are a lot of criticisms, but I think some of them are correct. The United States is still our biggest ally… We don’t always agree on different issues, but the logic is the same, and we are the biggest allies, and we should stay united.”

The new US national security strategy, unveiled on Friday, operates under the banner of “America First.” The document reportedly takes a critical stance toward European allies, suggesting that the United States will support those who oppose values promoted by the European Union, particularly concerning immigration policies.

Reports indicate that the strategy calls for fostering “resistance” within Europe and condemns what it describes as the “monitoring of free speech and suppression of political dissent” in Europe. The document also highlights Europe’s declining share of the global economy, attributing it to the rise of China and other global powers.

The strategy warns of a potential “civilizational erasure,” suggesting that if current trends persist, the continent may become unrecognizable within two decades. While acknowledging disagreements, Kallas’s comments underscore the importance of the transatlantic alliance and the need for continued cooperation between the US and Europe. The relationship remains vital for both sides, despite differing perspectives on certain policy matters.
