Sahrawi President Urges Reassessment of Africa-Europe Partnership

The President of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), Brahim Ghali, has reaffirmed the Sahrawi people’s unwavering commitment to their cause and called for a serious evaluation of the Africa-Europe partnership. Ghali’s remarks, reported by the Sahrawi Press Service, underscore the ongoing struggle for self-determination.

President Ghali made the statement while receiving foreign delegations in Boujdour, who were visiting refugee camps and Sahrawi institutions. These visits are part of international solidarity initiatives supporting the Sahrawi cause. He expressed his country’s appreciation for these initiatives, viewing them as a testament to the continued support for the Sahrawi people’s struggle.

Ghali emphasized that Sahrawi citizens are “continuing to defend their national goals, for which they have made great sacrifices.” He also advocated for strengthening the presence of European civil society in solidarity efforts.

During the visit, the delegations received a comprehensive overview of the latest developments in the Sahrawi issue and the progress made at both domestic and international levels.

In a separate context, Brahim Ghali, in his capacity as President of the SADR and Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, called for a review of the performance of the Africa-Europe partnership after 25 years of its implementation. Addressing the African Union-European Union summit in Luanda, he pointed out that the social and economic conditions on the continent still “reflect alarming rates of poverty, displacement, unemployment, and epidemics,” despite a quarter-century of efforts.

Ghali stressed the need for the European Union to play a more effective role in supporting peace in Africa, respecting the principles of international, humanitarian, and European law, and halting any external interference that exacerbates tensions. He also emphasized the importance of ensuring the right of peoples to self-determination and sovereignty over their natural resources.
