Algeria Engages IAEA on Nuclear Cooperation

Algiers, Algeria – Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, held discussions with the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, on Monday. The meeting, conducted via video conference, focused on strengthening cooperation between Algeria and the IAEA.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the talks covered a range of topics related to peaceful uses of nuclear technology. Areas of potential collaboration include nuclear safety and security, as well as the application of nuclear techniques in various sectors such as health, agriculture, and environmental monitoring.

Minister Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to the principles of nuclear non-proliferation and its support for the IAEA’s mandate in promoting the safe, secure, and peaceful uses of nuclear energy worldwide. He highlighted Algeria’s ongoing efforts to develop its national capabilities in nuclear science and technology, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in achieving these goals.

The discussions also touched upon the IAEA’s technical assistance programs, with Minister Attaf expressing Algeria’s interest in benefiting from the Agency’s expertise and resources. He underscored the potential for nuclear technology to contribute to Algeria’s sustainable development agenda, particularly in addressing challenges related to food security, water management, and climate change.

Director-General Grossi commended Algeria for its constructive engagement with the IAEA and its commitment to upholding international standards of nuclear safety and security. He reiterated the IAEA’s readiness to support Algeria’s efforts to harness the benefits of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes and pledged to further strengthen the partnership between the Agency and the Algerian government. The meeting concluded with both sides expressing their commitment to continued dialogue and collaboration on matters of mutual interest.
