Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is holding crucial meetings with key European allies this week to discuss ongoing efforts to secure peace in Ukraine. The diplomatic push comes as the conflict continues, with discussions focusing on potential pathways to a resolution.
Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with NATO Secretary-General, and will host a series of high-level talks in Brussels. These meetings will include European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Prior to the Brussels meetings, Zelenskyy was in London, where he met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German leader Friedrich Merz. The discussions in London centered on strategies for achieving a lasting and equitable peace in Ukraine.
A spokesperson for von der Leyen indicated that the talks are likely to address current peace initiatives and the possibility of the European Union providing a compensation loan to Ukraine. These financial considerations are expected to be a significant component of the broader discussions.
Zelenskyy is also scheduled to meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday. The series of meetings underscores the international community’s continued focus on finding a resolution to the conflict.
Prime Minister Starmer emphasized the importance of allowing President Zelenskyy to lead the peace process. “I will not put pressure on President Zelenskyy,” Starmer told ITV News. “The most important thing is to achieve a cessation of military action. I hope that happens and that it is done in a fair and sustainable way, and that is what we will focus on this afternoon.”
Discussions are also expected to include the potential use of frozen Russian assets in Europe to fund Ukraine’s recovery efforts. This issue has gained increasing attention as a potential source of financial support for the war-torn nation.
