Algeria and IAEA Sign Joint Statement on Nuclear Cooperation

Algiers, Algeria – Algeria and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) today signed a joint statement outlining collaborative efforts in the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology. The agreement was formalized during a virtual meeting between Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Attaf, and IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.

According to a statement released by the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the discussions served to follow up on agreements made during Director General Grossi’s official visit to Algeria in October. The joint statement, officially titled “Joint Statement on Cooperation Between Algeria and the Agency in the Field of Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Science and Technology,” aims to enhance technical assistance provided by the IAEA to Algeria.

This cooperation will particularly focus on conducting studies related to the development of peaceful applications of nuclear energy in several key sectors. These include electricity generation, healthcare, seawater desalination, and agriculture. The agreement signifies a strengthened partnership between Algeria and the IAEA in exploring and implementing nuclear technologies for the benefit of the Algerian people.

The move underscores Algeria’s commitment to leveraging nuclear science for peaceful purposes and its dedication to working with international organizations like the IAEA to achieve sustainable development goals. Further details on specific projects and initiatives stemming from this agreement are expected to be announced in the coming months.
