Washington D.C. – Algeria’s national team coach, Vladimir Petkovic, has stated that *Les Verts* are preparing for a challenging journey in the 2026 World Cup, drawn into a group alongside defending champions Argentina, a rapidly improving Austria, and debutants Jordan. The draw, held Friday in Washington D.C., placed Algeria in Group H with these formidable opponents.
Speaking to Algerian channel El Heddaf from the sidelines of the draw, Petkovic acknowledged the difficulty of the task ahead. “Argentina is not only the favorite to top the group, but also one of the leading contenders for the entire 2026 World Cup title,” he said. “However, we will defend our chances with all our might until the very last moment.”
The Swiss coach also commented on the other teams in the group. “Austria has developed significantly in recent years,” Petkovic noted. “They have become a strong team with a distinctive group of players, and we will be ready to face them.” Regarding Jordan, he added, “Jordan is participating in the World Cup for the first time, and they will certainly be looking to spring a surprise.”
Petkovic spoke highly of Argentina’s coach, Lionel Scaloni, recalling their time together at Lazio in the 2012-2013 season. He emphasized that Scaloni possessed leadership qualities even as a player. Scaloni has previously stated that Petkovic was among the first to encourage him to enter the world of coaching.
When asked about the Algerian national team squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for this month in Morocco, Petkovic stated, “We will address this matter in due course, especially given the possibility of some players sustaining injuries before the start of the tournament.” The Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to take place from December 21st to January 18th.
Commenting on the impressive performances of Victor Lekhal and Adel Boulbina with the national team in the Arab Cup, Petkovic said, “I follow all the players and what is being said about them. My convictions cannot be radically changed, but the doors of the national team remain open to everyone.”
Algeria will be making their fifth appearance in the World Cup, following participations in 1982, 1986, 2010, and 2014. They are scheduled to begin their campaign against Argentina, followed by Jordan, and will conclude their group stage matches against Austria.
