Algiers, December 8, 2025 – The ‘Algiers Declaration’ on Fair, Safe, and Responsible Digital Platforms in Africa has been hailed as a landmark achievement, granting the continent a stronger negotiating position in the global digital landscape. The declaration was adopted during a meeting of African Ministers of Communication, Information Technology, and Digital Economy, held under the auspices of the African Telecommunications Union on the sidelines of the African Startup Conference.
Sid Ali Zerrouki, Minister of Post and Telecommunications, expressed his pride in the adoption of the declaration. He stated that it represents a strategic step forward for Africa, enabling the continent to establish new rules for economic contribution, mechanisms for data protection within its borders, and standards for the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence.
“This declaration underscores our commitment to safeguarding African culture, language, and identity,” Minister Zerrouki emphasized. “It prioritizes the safety of users, particularly women, children, and vulnerable groups, within the digital environment.”
The Minister further noted that the adoption of the declaration in Algiers signifies Africa’s readiness to proactively address digital challenges. “Today’s achievement reflects a growing continental awareness of the importance of building a digital space that protects African interests and enhances our nations’ ability to control their technological future,” he added.
Minister Zerrouki concluded by affirming Algeria’s commitment to collaborating with all partners across the continent to solidify this direction and implement the declaration’s provisions, ultimately fostering fair, safe, and responsible digital development throughout Africa.
