Inmates Compete in 13th Algerian Prison Football Cup

Algiers, December 9, 2025 – The 13th edition of the Algerian Football Cup for inmates is set to kick off tomorrow at the Re-education and Rehabilitation Institution of Koléa. The event, organized within the prison system, promises to bring competitive spirit and a focus on rehabilitation through sports.

The Director-General of the Penitentiary Administration and Reintegration, Said Zerb, will officially launch the tournament at 10:00 AM. This year’s cup coincides with the commemoration of International Human Rights Day (December 10th) and the anniversary of the December 11, 1960, demonstrations, highlighting the importance of human rights, even within the confines of the penal system.

The Ministry of Justice stated that this edition is organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports, implementing an agreement signed on January 15, 2019, between the justice and sports sectors. This agreement aims to promote sports, physical activities, and youth engagement within correctional facilities. The event also receives support from the ‘Awlad El Houma’ association, which is actively involved in the reintegration of inmates through various sports and recreational activities across different penal institutions.

Sixty teams from penal institutions across four regions of Algeria – East, Central, West, and South – will participate in this year’s tournament. The Algerian Prison Football Cup seeks to foster a sense of community and provide a positive outlet for inmates, contributing to their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
