Algiers, December 10, 2025 – Algeria and Cuba have reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering bilateral cooperation in the healthcare sector. The Minister of Health, Mohamed Sadik Ait Mesaudan, received the Cuban Ambassador to Algeria, Hector Igarza Cabrera, at the ministry headquarters on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, to discuss ways to enhance collaboration.
The meeting served as an opportunity to underscore the strong historical ties between Algeria and Cuba. Both parties emphasized that healthcare cooperation between the two nations is a successful model of partnership, built on the exchange of expertise and the pursuit of shared interests.
Minister Ait Mesaudan praised the outstanding performance of Cuban medical teams working in healthcare facilities across Algeria. He suggested the possibility of redirecting these teams based on local health needs, aiming to improve the quality of services provided to citizens.
Ambassador Cabrera expressed his satisfaction with the current level of cooperation, highlighting the Algerian-Cuban health partnership as a successful example of South-South cooperation. He commended the synergy between Algerian and Cuban medical professionals.
The Cuban diplomat stressed the importance of further leveraging Cuba’s expertise in maternal and child health, particularly through the development of a ‘family doctor’ model, which has proven effective in prevention and continuous health monitoring.
The Minister of Health proposed expanding cooperation to include telemedicine and medical imaging, allowing for greater utilization of Cuban medical expertise through modern technologies. This initiative aims to provide wider access to specialized care and improve diagnostic capabilities across Algeria.
Both sides reiterated their commitment to strengthening the health partnership between Algeria and Cuba, in preparation for the upcoming session of the Joint Committee. This session is expected to be a significant milestone in expanding and developing cooperation to serve the interests of both countries. The discussions focused on practical steps to implement new programs and initiatives in the coming years.
