Cairo – On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, the President of the Arab Parliament, Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Yamahi, emphasized that the protection and promotion of human rights are fundamental pillars for achieving comprehensive and sustainable development. He asserted that upholding these rights is an essential requirement for the advancement, stability, and cohesion of societies across the Arab world.
In a statement released Wednesday, Al Yamahi highlighted the Arab Parliament’s unwavering commitment to strengthening human rights mechanisms and fostering a culture of respect for fundamental freedoms. He stressed the importance of aligning national legislation with international human rights standards to ensure effective implementation and accountability.
“Protecting human rights is not merely a moral imperative; it is also a strategic investment in our collective future,” Al Yamahi stated. “Societies that respect and uphold the rights of their citizens are more likely to be prosperous, stable, and resilient.”
The President further noted the critical role of civil society organizations, human rights defenders, and independent media in monitoring and reporting on human rights violations. He called on governments to create an enabling environment for these actors to operate freely and without fear of reprisal.
Al Yamahi also addressed the challenges facing the Arab region in the area of human rights, including armed conflicts, displacement, and economic inequality. He urged the international community to provide support and assistance to countries affected by these crises, while also holding perpetrators of human rights abuses accountable.
The Arab Parliament reaffirmed its commitment to working with governments, civil society organizations, and international partners to promote and protect human rights throughout the Arab world. It called for renewed efforts to address the root causes of human rights violations and to build a more just and equitable society for all.
