President Tebboune Commemorates December 11, 1960 Demonstrations

Algiers – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has issued a message commemorating the 65th anniversary of the December 11, 1960, demonstrations, a pivotal moment in Algeria’s struggle for independence.

In his address, the President highlighted the significance of these demonstrations, stating that they represented the entire nation’s embrace of the principles outlined in the November 1, 1954 Proclamation and its unwavering commitment to achieving the revolution’s goals.

“On this remarkable day in our national struggle and armed resistance, we commemorate with pride the 65th anniversary of the December 11, 1960 demonstrations,” President Tebboune declared. He emphasized that these demonstrations, witnessed in streets and squares across the nation, showcased the Algerian people’s dedication to the ideals of the revolution.

The President further noted that the massive crowds, the impassioned voices, the raised flags, and the celebratory ululations during those demonstrations reflected the strong bond between the people and those who fought tirelessly for Algeria’s liberation. He recalled the sacrifices made by men and women in cities, villages, and hamlets, all united in their determination to see Algeria free.

President Tebboune also referenced the famous quote by revolutionary figure Larbi Ben M’hidi, “Throw the revolution to the streets, and the people will embrace it,” underscoring the pivotal role the demonstrations played in shaping the international perception of the Algerian revolution. He affirmed that the revolution, with its noble principles and lofty goals, had captured the world’s attention.

“As we honor these principles and goals, in commitment to the eternal message and in tribute to the legacy of the martyr Didouche Mourad, ‘If we fall as martyrs, preserve our memory,’ we take pride in the authenticity of our revolutionary heritage,” President Tebboune concluded, reaffirming Algeria’s dedication to its revolutionary roots.
